Ms. Riggan Brings Groundhog Day Magic to Netzaberg Elementary School
NETZABERG, Germany — At Netzaberg Elementary School, Groundhog Day has grown into one of the most anticipated annual traditions, thanks to the passion and creativity of teacher Ms. Riggan. Since the school first opened its doors in August 2008, Riggan has shared her enthusiasm for the often-overlooked holiday with generations of students, transforming it into a celebration of learning, curiosity, and schoolwide engagement.
Each year, Riggan designs a full day of Groundhog Day-themed lessons that align with grade-level academic standards. Students participate in activities that include making predictions, studying shadows and weather patterns, strengthening reading and writing skills, and solving math problems with a groundhog-themed approach. The lessons combine rigorous academic instruction with engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
One of the students’ favorite traditions is the opportunity to “hibernate” in the classroom. Riggan invites students to bring sleeping bags from home, transforming the classroom into a cozy den where students can read alongside classmates. The activity creates excitement while encouraging literacy in a memorable and interactive environment.
The celebration concludes with students watching the annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Students eagerly observe to see whether the groundhog predicts an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Following the viewing, students compare the official prediction with forecasts they made earlier in the day, reinforcing scientific reasoning, data comparison, and classroom discussion.
Through her dedication and creativity, Riggan has introduced an entire school community to the joy of a non-traditional holiday. What began as a personal passion has become a cherished Netzaberg Elementary School tradition that continues to enrich student learning experiences year after year.
