GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – At Netzaberg Elementary School, building strong connections within the military community is a top priority. This spring, the school proudly partnered with USO Grafenwöhr to support students and families through a series of engaging and meaningful events focused on literacy, resilience, and community connection.

Throughout the month of March, the USO played a key role in supporting the school’s literacy initiatives. A highlight was the USO’s recorded reading program, an ongoing initiative available at USO centers around the world. Traditionally, service members who are deploying, on temporary duty, or stationed away from their families visit a USO center to record themselves reading a book aloud. The recording, along with a copy of the book, is then sent to their child or loved one, helping maintain connection despite the distance.

At Netzaberg ES, students were given the unique opportunity to flip the script. Instead of receiving recordings, they became the storytellers, recording themselves reading books to loved ones. Students shared their recordings with parents, grandparents, and even younger cousins back in the United States, creating meaningful connections across miles. One parent shared how much the experience meant to her, noting that she had once recorded books for her children while deployed, and now they were able to do the same for family members. The USO team also joined Netzaberg ES during its Literacy Fair, helping to foster a love of reading while connecting families with valuable community resources.

In April, the partnership continued as Netzaberg ES students and staff joined the USO for their Purple Up celebration in honor of Month of the Military Child. The event featured interactive games and activities that emphasized teamwork and resilience, qualities essential to military-connected students. The USO also supported the school’s Purple Up Kinder Volksmarch, encouraging participation and community spirit as students, families, and staff came together across the installation.

This growing partnership between Netzaberg Elementary School and the USO Grafenwöhr highlights the power of collaboration in supporting military-connected students. By working together, both organizations continue to create meaningful experiences that strengthen literacy, promote resilience, and build a connected, supportive community.
