Savoring Stories: Quarterly Book Tasting Encourages a Love of Reading at Netzaberg Elementary
NETZABERG, Germany — Each quarter, third-grade students at Netzaberg Elementary School are invited to explore new stories through a book tasting hosted by third-grade teacher Mrs. Ramirez and Media Specialist Ms. Kloack. The interactive activity is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage students to explore a wide range of reading genres.
With more than 11,000 print books available in the school library, choosing a new book can feel overwhelming for young readers. During the book tasting, students “sample” a variety of titles, spending a few minutes with each book to preview its genre, themes and style before moving on to the next selection. The experience allows students to discover new authors and genres they may not have otherwise considered.
“I enjoy holding book tastings in the library,” Kloack said. “It’s a fun reading activity that gets students excited about books.”
The quarterly event not only builds enthusiasm for reading but also supports literacy skills by helping students make thoughtful, independent reading choices. By the end of each tasting, students leave with a list of books they are eager to check out, along with a renewed excitement for reading that extends beyond the library walls.
