Zirkus Club at Netzaberg: A Legacy of Talent, Teamwork, and Transformation

The Big Top recently came alive at Netzaberg Elementary as the Zirkus Club put on an unforgettable performance that had the audience on the edge of their seats. The show featured a wide range of acts including acrobatics, silks, wheels, juggling, clowns, and even a live rock band. It was an evening to remember, with each act more awe-inspiring than the last.
Zirkus Club, an after-school program that blends athleticism with artistry, has become a cherished institution at the school. Students, who have spent the year perfecting their craft, were given the opportunity to shine in extraordinary ways. The club has evolved over the years, growing into one of the largest and most beloved extracurricular activities in the community.

Zirkus Club’s history stretches back to the opening of Netzaberg Elementary nearly 17 years ago. Founded by PE teacher David Gray, the club initially focused on gymnastics and ballroom dancing before expanding to include unicycles, juggling, and aerial acts.
“Zirkus is for everyone,” says Coach Gray. “You can be a dancer, daredevil, artist, or athlete. You don’t have to be big and strong—just willing to try something new.”
This inclusive philosophy has been key to the club’s growth, with the 2023-2024 school year seeing over 150 students involved in Zirkus and other dance-oriented programs—an impressive testament to its increasing popularity.
As Coach Gray began to step back from his leadership role, a new generation of educators took the reins. Alyssa Freeman, who began assisting with gymnastics in 2022, soon found herself co-leading the club.
“When Coach Gray was considering retirement, I stepped in to help him run it and learn the ropes,” Freeman said. “This past year, I had the pleasure of co-running Zirkus with Mr. Anderson, and it turned out to be a huge success.”

Chris Anderson, a fifth grade teacher and proud Zirkus parent, joined the leadership team after witnessing his daughter’s performance. “I was blown away,” Anderson said. “When Alyssa asked if I’d co-run it with her, I graciously accepted. The rest is history.”
A Circus of Possibilities
Zirkus Club is divided into two branches—Circus Acrobatics and Circus on Wheels—both featuring a dynamic blend of skill, artistry, and performance. Together, the groups comprise 95 students and 19 volunteer coaches, including teachers, parents, and even middle school students.
- Wheels Group: Led by Mr. Anderson, this group includes skateboards, ripsticks, walking globes, and unicycles. “I’ve been amazed at how much these kids have grown,” he said.
- Acrobatics Group: Under Mrs. Freeman’s guidance, this group features everything from lyra and silks to gymnastics, rings, and trampolines. It’s a showcase of strength, coordination, and creativity.

Both groups meet weekly, with practices intensifying as performance time nears. Students in grades 3–5 are selected through a competitive audition process. This year, 145 students auditioned for the club, and 95 were accepted, highlighting the immense interest and talent at Netzaberg.
While the daring stunts and spectacular shows are undoubtedly a highlight, what truly sets Zirkus apart is the personal growth students experience.
“My favorite part is seeing the quiet kids come out of their shell and shine,” said Mr. Anderson. “There’s something for everyone, and watching all the acts come together is truly magical.”
Fifth grader King Terrell, a longtime participant, shared similar sentiments. “Other schools don’t have this opportunity, so I want to do it while I can,” he said. “I’ll miss being part of Zirkus—the people, the coaches, the challenge. It helped me stay active and challenged me in many ways.”
King’s favorite act? Gymnastics. “I love doing flips and watching others do them too,” he said. “Zirkus has helped me grow, and I’m excited for the next group of students to find the same joy.”

Zirkus Club is more than just an after-school activity—it’s a community, a creative outlet, and, for many students, the highlight of their school experience. The club’s combination of discipline, fun, and inclusivity continues to inspire both participants and spectators.
As another year of dazzling performances comes to a close, the legacy of Zirkus is stronger than ever. With the continued dedication of coaches, enthusiastic students, and a supportive community, Zirkus will undoubtedly continue to thrive, inspiring new generations with the power of performance, passion, and play.
